I usually paint from life, in my studio, but also from photographs if life drawing sessions are not possible, e.g. if I paint an underwater portrait or if a portrait should be a surprise. And yet a painted portrait is never a copy of a photograph but an artistic interpretation. I therefore don't mind painting from a bad quality photographs which have something special about them. It might be a beautiful light, gesture, smile or they might be a reminder of a special moment.
Before painting a full colour portrait, I do a few sketches no matter if I paint from life or a photograph thus getting to know the person to be portrayed. Apart from the likeness, there is a challenge of capturing the personality and momentous mood. I want my portraits to tell a story and intrigue the viewer. I hope they do. I can draw or paint a straitforward portrait or add an object, pattern or detail reflecting a person's inner world.
I work in soft pastels, watercolours, pencil, charcoal, acrylics or mixed media. Please contact me with any enquiries.
I also accept city-, land- and seascape as well as pet portrait commissions. For examples of my landscape paintings, please see 'SEA' and 'PLEIN AIR'.
