These works are inspired by the transformative effects of the warm Mediterranean light that is both brilliant and soft. While the light in the north is transparent, southern light is dense like honey. It wraps around objects, figures and faces, changing their usual, often mundane, appearance. It transforms every day scenes into something more meaningful and poetic. I find it especially interesting in contre jour lighting when a subject is placed against the light. I am fascinted by how light changes the colour spectrum entirely! Mediterranean light has its own presence, becoming a subject of a painting itself - and not an easy one! Living in a coastal town in the south of France, I naturally spend a lot of time by the sea, observing the light when swimming and painting en plein air.
